Nefyn the first community to develop Culture Beacon app

Volunteers in Nefyn will soon become the first in the country to develop their own app to deliver information on the archaeology and history of the town using cutting-edge iBeacon technology.  Based on the system recently launched at the National Slate Museum, Llanberis, the Nefyn app will also be delivered through the Culture Beacon system developed in collaboration between the People’s Collection Wales and north-Wales technology company, Locly.

Following a kick-starting workshop with People’s Collection Wales and Locly on the 18th August, volunteers will be working to develop existing information currently available in leaflet form, as well as newly created video and audio clips, to produce a new app providing valuable insights into the heritage of Nefyn and the surrounding countryside.

The People’s Collection Wales Culture Beacon app has been developed to provide a single, Wales-wide platform that can deliver high quality localised culture and heritage content and experiences to smartphone and tablet users.  Using both iBeacon and GPS technology, the Culture Beacon app can seamlessly operate both indoors and outdoors, with the potential to deliver location and time specific content, individually tailored to the user.

In Nefyn, the project will be supported by a number of local businesses, as well as local-authority facilities that will provide access to free Wi-Fi to allow users to download and cache content on their devices.  It is hoped that this project will become the first of many that will see local communities and businesses working together to develop apps that encourage more visitors to explore local heritage and contribute to the local economy.
