Howard Parry (1947-). Llanrhystud. South Wales Borderers ; Bargoed Colliery

In 1965, as a 17yr old Howard Parry from Bargoed enlisted as a Regular soldier in the South Wales Borderers and by end of the year was in Borneo engaged in the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation. He then served in the Aden Emergency in 1966/67 where the South Wales Borderers were some of the last British troops to leave Aden. Leaving the Army in 1971, Howard returned to Bargoed Colliery where he has briefly been employed prior to enlisting in the Army, but he remained as an Army reservist for several more years. Howard was an active participant in the Miner's Strike of 1984, losing his job as a collier, as a direct result for the closure of the mines by the Conservative government of the time. Howard and his wife eventually resettled to Llanrhystud, near Aberystwyth.

This collection contains an audio recorded conversation between Howard and Neil Davies of Adferiad, in which Howard talks about his childhood and service in the South Wales Borderers in Borneo and Aden. The collection also contains a written description of Howard's life and photographs from his time in the Army, the Miner's Strike and of more recent events.
