Rabbi Asher Grunis (1877-1937)

Rabbi Asher Grunis was born in Czarnocinin, a town in the Russian Empire that is now a part of Poland. He became Cardiff's first community Rav and successfully campaigned for the religious rights of the Jewish community. Thanks to him, Jewish children were able to leave school early on Friday during winter months to observe the start of Sabbath. Similarly, students would not be examined on Jewish holidays. He also succeeded in the provision of kosher food to prisoners in Cardiff throughout the year.
