Coronation Celebrations 1953

On 2 June 1953, the coronation of Elizabeth II took place in London. The first coronation ever to be televised, it was viewed by millions across the world. In the Vale of Glamorgan this was also the case. Many street parties were also held, as they were across the UK. These parties usually place a long table in a street, creating a communal venue flanked by the homes of those attending. The food is also made locally, with different members of the community contributing to the party.

In Barry, street parties took place on Travis Street and Hirwain Street. An event was also held at Romilly School, showing that it was a community event that extended beyond residential areas. Similarly, in Dinas Powys, a coronation party was held at the local Scout Hall.
