Thomas, David Cuthbert

Well known for his friendship with Sassoon and Graves, and immortalised by Sassoon as Dick Tiltwood, David Cuthbert Thomas was an Old Breconian. The son of Rev E Thomas, the Vicar of Llanedy, he was at Christ College between 1906 and 1914. He served in the First World War as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and died from wounds on March 18th 1916 after being hit by sniper’s bullet during a night working party at the front line. His name is one of 57 names of former Christ College pupils on the First World War Roll of Honour in Christ College Chapel. As well as being Editor of the school magazine and a member of the Classical Sixth, he was also a good all round athlete. The team photographs in this collection include photographs of him during the seasons in which he played for Christ College, Brecon.
