Welsh Costume: Cambrian Costumes 'proofs'

The proofs appear to be identical to the other prints except that seven have different hats and heads painted in watercolour, carefully cut and stuck over the originals. No 5 also has an arm pasted over the original. All those with changes had tall crowned hats with narrow, curved brims, like those sometimes worn by women horse riders. The watercolour additions are more like Welsh Hats (a conical crown with a flat brim) but the heights of the crowns, which vary in these additions, are much lower in proportion to the brim diameter than most surviving Welsh hats. These alterations were not adopted for the final print run.
No 8 had an original watercolour attached to the print (with a pin) and is identical to the original watercolour except the cloak is red.
