Welsh Costume: Newman (small) set
During the 1850s ‘60s and ‘70s Newman and Co. produced series of small and large prints of Welsh costumes, similar to those of Rock and Co. These were often sold as a set in special but cheap bindings, or sold with a set of views of a particular location.
e.g.
Newman & Co [n.d], Six Plates of Welch [Sic] Costumes. No. 1
Newman & Co [n.d], Panorama of Welsh Costumes. [11 plates]
The albums were printed on paper about 14 x 19 cms.
They were also printed on letter heads and on china.
John Newman and Co, engravers and print publishers, were based at 48 Watling Street, London. No date is given on most of their prints, but the appearance of some in a dated tourist’s journal of 1853 and pencil copies of two in an album dated 1854 suggest that some of them (possibly small series nos. 1-12) were published by the early 1850s.
Numbers 13-17 in the set of small prints are distinct from nos. 1-12. Nos. 16 and 17 include the imprint: 'John Newman and Co, 48 Watling St., London, January 18th, 1874, Entered at Stationers Hall.’ and some have ‘Engd. & Pubd.’ or ‘Engd. & Pub.’ rather than ‘Eng. & Pub. by Newman & Co.’ which appears on all nos. 1-12.
Some were later reproduced as postcards by J. Valentine and Co. Dundee.
