A view of Barry Docks looking east, the two ships in the foreground are in drydock, probably owned at that point by Shearman and Sons, latterly by C.H. Bailey. As the drydock is flooded at the time of the photograph it seems likely that the further of the ships has just gone into the dock or shortly be leaving it. On the far left men can seen on the dry dock caisson (the gate which seals the dock) working with ropes attached to the ship. Other points of note are that Ranks Mills are not visible in the distance, so the date is prior to their construction in 1904-05, also that the railway rolling bridge from the Basin across the Lady Windsor Lock is not in position although the tracks for it are installed.
