Following many decades of occupation, the mansion became vacant in 1946 and by 1957 was derelict and was demolished. The church of Eglwys Newydd, which contained a famous sculpted monument to Mariamne Johnes by Francis Chantrey caught fire in 1932 and the monument was destroyed.
