In 1853 my great-great grandfather Hugh Morgan was furnace manager at Penydarran Iron Works in Merthyr Tydfil; he had been there since 1837 and had been interviewed by the Royal Commission investigating child labour in 1842. He died in 1869 during an asthma attack, that ailment hardly surprising in view of the working environment so vividly described in this article.
