Description
The children and staff of Cantal Board School, Llanbister in the 1890s. The older girl at the front left would have been a pupil teacher or monitor. Note the stout boots worn by even the youngest children, for many had miles to walk to school, often over rough terrain and in all weathers. Lack of good boots was a frequent reason for absence recorded in Victorian school log books.
