Description

A 1912 view of the newly built streets of Lewistown. Built for the colliers of the 2nd Rhondda Main Colliery opened in 1909 by the Lewis Merthyr Consolidated Collieries Limited and named after the chairman, William Thomas Lewis (later Lord Merthyr). The Nantymoel Industrial Socities Dairy can be seen in the centre, with the large chimney. The diary occupies land formely belonging to Pentre-beili Farm where a smallholding was recorded in the Tithe Apportionment Schedule of 1854 as Aber-nant-yr-hebog ('the confluence of Nant-yr-hebog'.)
