Description

Fishing trap

Used at Tan ‘Rallt near Betws-y-coed. It is a simple basket trap of hazel made especially to fit a narrow overflow channel alongside falls on the river Lledr. It can only be used at times of high water.

Similar basketry and weaving techniques for making the coracle were also used for the construction of fish traps. The long sides were woven and tied into a point. Once inside the narrow, funnel shape of the trap, and against the flow of the river, the salmon was unable to turn around.
