Description
In April 1559 a storm blew down an ash tree from which miraculously appeared a cross. Sir Thomas Stradling took it to London where he put it on display and had copies made of it. This brought him into conflict with Elizabeth and he was subsequently imprisoned only being released in 1563. The cross disappeared but this was placed by one of the later owners of St Donats Castle as a memorial.
