Description

The "red crane". There is one spot where the quarry workings emerged on the far side of the mountain, over half a mile from the entrance at the front. Here the slate was lifted up from the open topped chamber with this crane and transported around the mountain above ground. When work ceased here the crane was abandoned in situ and eventually corroded red with rust, hence the name given to it by the local populace.
