This picture shows the end of a DC (direct chill) aluminium slab cast. The desired length ( about 150") has been reached and the cast rolling slabs have just exited the moulds. The secondary water sprays from the moulds are causing the excess water to boil on the top of the slab. The slab was cooled whilst in the DC casting pit to be cold enough to go straight to the Noble & Lund saw to crop the "top & tail" before being sent to the Ingersoll scalping machine to remove the oxide skin prior to preheating & hot rolling.
