This flywheel press operator is performing the second stage operation for the production of Astralite motor cycle wheels from an AA5000 series aluminium magnesium sheet alloy. The first stage blanks ( behind the press) are lightly formed before riveting together and spinning of the tyre bead rim. When Rheola closed in 1981 this product was transferred to a light industrial unit in Neath with about five employees (including John Shaw as factory manager and Simon Foulkes as production foreman) as a token effort by British Aluminium to retain some jobs in the Neath Valley. Unfortunately the start-up unit only lasted a couple of years.
