Description
Llwyd ap Iwan writes to his parents and sister to informs them that J. S. Williams, James Aaron and Thomas Griffith have arrived safely on the 'Trinidad' but the 'gold contingent' remain in Buenos Aires, and they are not expected to arrive for a few weeks. He hopes that quantities of gold will be found in the Andes, so that thousands of workers will be able to earn a good wage. It would also encourage more people to emigrate to Patagonia. If gold is found, he believes it will result in salvation or damnation for the Welsh Settlement.
Llwyd also writes of the need for more ships to carry goods to the river. He bemoans the fact that the shipping trade is currently in the hands of foreigners and there is not one Welsh sailor. He says he hopes to come to Wales with Myfanwy (his wife) within the next year or two. In his previous letter he mentioned their recent marriage. Last week the Rev. and Mrs Abraham Matthews called on them and brought them a wedding present. He warns his parents not to send them any presents as they have everything they need. However, he would be very grateful for a photograph of their two grandsons (his nephews) from Bangor.
The last passage of the letter is dated 15 July and Llwyd explains that he has not had an opportunity to post his letter. 'Williams Mostyn' [E. J. Williams] and his wife called to see them and they went together to the tea festival at Bryn Crwn on Sunday evening. Captain William Richards and the others have still not arrived from Buenos Aires.
