Description

Group of old colonists standing by 'yr amddiffynfa' (old fort), at Caer Antur, near Rawson, Chubut, 28 July 1890. The photograph was taken on 'Gŵyl y Glaniad', the anniversary of the landing of the first Welsh settlers in Patagonia on 28 July 1865. This was the site of the first settlement established by the Welsh in the Chubut valley in 1865. Also seen here is one of the original old carts which was built by Hugh Hughes (Cadfan Gwynedd) using wood from an old shipwreck found in the Chubut river.

Photograph taken by John Murray Thomas (1847-1924).
