Description

During their stay in Cambridge the Hewlett Family attended many artistic and educational events. May Hewlett wrote:
"it wasn't just Father who wanted to improve his education, the whole family did. I remember my Mother & Father always encouraging the children to read and learn and broaden our education. This photo shows Mother & I at a Garden Party at Shaw Corner, the home of George Bernard Shaw at Welwyn. George was a Fabian and encouraged everyone to get an education - he was also a vegetarian, just like my Mother & I - and an outspoken pacifist. So we had a lot in common! Mother is seated on the grass to the left of the photo with her arm raised. She is waving to me - the little girl just emerging from behind the lady standing behind the man himself GBS."
