Description

This document contains the full transcription, translation and supporting research notes for Margaret (Morris) Simcox James' 1863 notebook.
The notebook, which is originally addressed to Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil, contains transcribed hymns, poetry, notes on family relations and various religious musings. Although the variety in handwriting styles suggests multiple contributors to the text, it is believed that Margaret herself is responsible for the majority of entries which she began in Dowlais at the age of 13.

The original notebook was digitised by its current owner in Pittsburgh, USA, with the transcription work undertaken by a People's Collection Wales volunteer in Aberystwyth.
