Regina. v. Llewellin -

John Maggs - I live at Pontnewynydd - I am
a Cordwainer - I joined the Chartists
Society held at the House of
John Llewellin who has been apprehended
on a charge of High Treason -
about 12 Months ago
^ I became a Member of the above
Society - I paid five pence upon
my entrance and received a Card -
I cannot recollect what was on it -
One part of it was Universal Suffrage -
I paid the five pence to a man who
acted as Secretary - He was the
Secretary of the above Society -
My name was entered in a
Book also by the Secretary - Llewellin the
Prisoner was present - and received
the money - He was Treasurer -
The Card I received was signed by the
- Secretary - The Card
was headed " The Working Men's
Association" - I attended
the meetings weekly for two or three
months after I entered - Llewellin
the Prisoner frequently addressed
the Members upon the principle
of the Charter - I have heard him say
that we must Stick up for the rights
of the Charter and vote by ballot,
Universal Suffrage, annual Parliaments,

no property qualifications - and the
Country divided into voting divisions -
on most occasions of my attendance
at the meetings I saw Prisoner there
acting as Treasurer - - The Members
upon entrance were balloted for - The
persons wishing to become Members
were proposed by one Member and
seconded by another and then the
ballot box was produced - The
one we used at Llewellin's - and
the tins with which we voted were
similar to those also now produced

the ^ square pieces of tin were in favor
of the member to be admitted and

the three square ^ was against him -
and upon voting each member was
supplied with one of each - tin - The
box was then handed round by
a Brother Member who received the
the tins for admission first,
and for his rejection, second - and
the majority of tins decided whether
the person should be admitted
or not - I was present at a large
meeting of Chartists held at Mr Llewellin's
House - We Adjourned to the back
Hustings was erected - Edwards
of - I saw
Prisoner there - I also saw John [Frost]

Frost there - Vincent was there -
Jones the Watchmaker was there -
I remember Prisoner proposing John
Frost as the Delegate for the
Pontypool and Caerleon District -
to represent them in the Convention -
The proposition was Seconded and
Frost was elected - Frost Vincent
Jones the Watchmaker and Carrier
addressed the Meeting on the principles
of the Charter - In the Evening of
that day I joined the procession
and went to the Kings Head Inn
Pontypool - We were again addressed
by Carrier and Vincent - I continued
a month or two after this meeting as
Member - but thinking no good would
come of it I left it - During my
Attendance at the weekly meetings
Llewellin was there and he was
the Treasurer -
