John Walters Collier living at the Argoed -
saith - On Sunday Evening between 6 & 7 O'clock
My Wife came into my house & said "For God's sake go
away somewhere & hide yourself or they (meaning
the Chartists) will take you away - Nonsense said
I they will not have any thing to do with me. -
About 5 minutes after 15 or 20 men came into the
____ amongst them I know Thomas Edwards

_____ George Beach & Joseph Coles
house ^ one pointed a gun at me & another a spear
(Joseph Coles) and said Walters look at this holding
out the spear & and the man with the gun said "What is
your life better than ours -" I made answer "If you
are going to kill me kill at once for from here I
will not go upon my soul - What do you want with
me, what are you going to do - they said "you shall
"know at Newbridge" - One outside said - "Damn your
"eyes bring him out he knows more about it than
"either of us" - then I said I had no money to go about
the Country & a man cannot travel without money
with that George Beach presented me a shilling
& said I shouldn't want for any thing - I did not take
the money but said "Well by God I won't go - Beach
had a naked sword which he waved about the house -
Just Before
^this time Job Harries a Collier of Argoed came
into the house and said "Walters come along with us

& then shall no more harm come to you than to me -
I still said "I won't go - With that they seized me
& hurried me out of the house without any Coat or Hat.
They took my Son of 15 years old also. I was obliged to go
with them as far as Crumlin Gate where I managed to
escape - Soon after I was taken out of the house some
one brought me my Coat & Hat.

Elizabeth Walters Wife of the last Witness says on
____the 3rd Novr
Sunday I had heard that the people were going down to Newport
In the evening I heard the women crying & I went out to
see what was the matter - I went behind John Daniel's
house which is near the Tram road & there saw a great

many Men ^ armed with Pikes - They said "all the
womens that's here go to their Houses -" I ran back to
my own house & just then Wm Jones said to me
I had better lock the door & tell my husband to go to bed
I went in, locked the door & told my husband to hide
himself away somewhere - "Oh they don't want me"
he says - The men came to the door & called "Walters"
We did not answer - they immediately burst open the
door & the bolt was jerked into the middle of the
room - they came in & filled the room - they told my
husband several times to come with them but he
refused - One of them held a gun to his breast & said
"Is your life better than ours" - Wm John Llewillyn

made a motion to the Man that had the Pike & whispered
"out with him out with him" He held out his pike
then to my husband & said "Do you see this" - My
Husband still refused to go - Job Harries said "Come
come Walters come along" I turned round to Billy
Llewellyn & told him to hold his tongue & said it is
only 3 weeks since you've been here before -
Immediately after this they pushed my husband out
of the house - soon after my husband was
outside the man with the gun came in & asked for
My husbands' coat & hat which I gave him -
Thomas Edwards Wm John Llewellyn Aaron Smallcombe
George Beach & Joseph Coles were amongst those that
came into the house - Coles had the spear. -

The Shop door communicates with the kitchen - After the Mob
had broken open the door I went into the Shop I brought out ^ about 6
Candles & went into the kitchen & locked the Shop door - least the
Mob should go in there & take any thing - I lighted all the candles
in order that we might see
them - Some of the Mob took away the candles with them -
The man with the Gun took one - The Mob
took most if not all the Candles which I had brought in
except one which I held in my hand -
