William Stevens of Pillgwenlly in the Borough of Newport
Blacksmith states - I have known John Gibby about half a year -
He was a Blacksmith working at Mr Evans at Pill - I keep a shop at
Pill and Edward Brickley worked for me for nearly two years - the Friday
before the riots at Newport I went to my shop about 7 o'clock in the evening
and there found John Gibby and another man grinding something at the
Grindstone in my shop - I did not see what he was grinding and as I
have often given persons leave to grind things in my shop I did not
think any thing of it - I went out leaving Brickley at work making hinges
for Ashfield the Butcher - when I came back Gibby and the man were gone
A few days before Jenkin Morgan whom I knew as a Milkman at
Pill came and asked me to make him something the shape of a Pike it
was sharpe at the point and thin at the edges to fit upon a stick - I filed it
I did not know nor did he tell me what it was for - he paid me 1'/6d for it
and went away - When he came to me first he asked me to make him
something like what I made Davies the Potter but sharper at the point
Davies is a Potter at Pill and brought a pattern in wood of something
he wanted made to fit upon a stick which he said was to cut clay with
it was about one or one and a half inch wide about 10 inches long and
made to fit upon a stick but that was not sharp - Davies came a 2nd
time and said he had broken the one I first made for him and I
made him a second - I do not think he could have broken the first by
fair play - Jenkins did not say what he wanted his for - I never
attended any meetings I never attended any in my life - I did not
approve of it and never went near it - I have not seen Davies since
but have heard that he lost his arm in the Riots by being shot thro'
Jenkin Morgan I have also heard is in Prison for joining the Riots
