Henry Chappell Policeman of Newport states
On a Monday morning the 4th November I was standing about three
feet inside the front door of the Westgate when the mob came in
front - The greater part came round the western corner from
Stow Hill - the rest came from Commercial Street - I am certain
I saw one hundred or upwards come from Stow Hill and about
50 from Commercial Street From where I stood I could see
the corner of Mr Clement's shop on the one side and nearby if
not quite to Henry Evans's shop on the other
