Henry Ewins Sworn States I am the son of a Pastry
Cook in Newport, I am not a Special Constable. I
remember Monday the 4th,, November. The Rioters came
down, I mean the Chartists as they are called, I saw
them, they came down between 9 and 10 o'Clock, I was
at Mr,,Clements Corner by the lamp post, I could see
up Stow Hill, a good way up, as far as Charles Street
I saw a large body of men Coming down Stow Hill,
Some with Pikes on their Shoulders, and some with
Guns, they were in front, they were coming down
in regular order, five or six abreast. I cannot say
whether any one was giving the Command, I was not
close to them, I went back, I did not see any one
I Knew, When I saw them they reached from the
Westgate as far as the top of Charles Street, that was
as far as I could see, When they came round
Clements Corner they turned towards the Gates going
into the Westgate Yard - When the Men in front
got as far as the Gates there was a large body of
Men in front of the Inn Door, I knew the House was
attacked, I heard the firing, I went up to my father's
