Thomas Duffield says I keep the Old
Bridgend Public House at Risca. I was asleep
on Sunday Evening in the parlor when I my wife woke me &
said there were 3 men enquiring for a Saddle & a
gun. I immely went out to them. I asked them
what they wanted they said "your saddle & gun"
I said they should not have it if they would not
walk out I would make them. they said "that's
your meaning" they went out & in less than 5 minutes
the Crew came in. I immely went to the Cellar
door. they came to me & asked me for some beer-
my wife filled them some. I asked one of them
for 3d for a pint. He said d - n your eyes if you
ask for 3d. I'll run you through with a spear
Ann Thomas was standing by the fire at the time
This was in the kitchen - one of them there took a
knife & cut about 2 lbs of Bacon off a flitch. Another
came up to him & said d - n your eyes if you do not
put that back Ill run you through. the first put

it back into the cupboard. in putting it back he
saw the bread & cheese & cold meat left from our
dinner. he took that out & the person that stopped
him at first, partook of that. I then locked
the cellar door. they took hold of me. I asked
them where they were going to take me. they said
it was no difference. I told them I would not
come. They dragged me into the kitchen. I asked
them if they wo[ul]d let me fetch my hat. they did
I went up stairs. my wife followed me. She told
them her husband sho[ul]d not come to them that
night. If you won't let him come we'll shoot
you they said and two men
immely snapped their guns at her. She said
fire away you shall kill me before you have
my husband. I then ran away thro' the back door -
for a short time. Others came in afterwards &
had beer & mostly paid for it. The House about

& then came back & said "its all gone" We then
went to bed (about 1/4 past 3) I had not been in
half an hour before I heard the door burst open
I then heard the Bar door burst open. I told my
wife to go down. She was afraid. I jumped out
of bed. They said here's someone coming mind the
guns. I heard the Clock strike 5. as they went
out. I should know one of them all.

On Monday about noon the Mob began to come
back. Many called at my house. My Servant
seemed very free with them I shook hands with
many of them. I made my remarks to my Wife
It was very strange she was so free with them.

On Monday night a person told me there was
a double barreled gun. he said he had. He asked
what sort was mine. I told him. he then gave me the Gun
he said it was given him by an old woman
near the Welch Oak who asked him to take it for fear some
body shod come back & shoot her with it.
