Blackwood Decr 3 . 1839.

My Dear Sir,

Reg: pros. Wm Davies

I have been much Engaged both yesterday
and to day in the Examination of parties here
whom I was led to believe could give
important Evidence against this prisoner, but the
process I have met with is not so flattering
as I could wish - I have, no doubt, examined
nearly 20 witnesses, but they all most stoutly
deny that Davies was at the Coach and
Horses Inn on the Sunday evening or went
any Distance with the Mob - with the
Exception of the witness Wm Harris, whose
Evidence appears to be highly important
and was wrung out of him with much difficulty
I packed him off last night with Scard &
as he is rather a bad Character himself
and a slippery fellow, he ought not to
be allowed to return here until after
the Assizes - I enclose you his Depositions
The strongest, and most anxious Desire
of suppressing the truth prevails amongst
all parties here - and many from fear -

Page 2:
We have been anxiously looking out for Richard
Pugh the land lord of the Coach and Horses Inn -
___________for some time
who has been ^ non est inventus
and John Thomas will bring him down
to -morrow - to you - when I think you
may be able to collect a vast Deal of
Evidence on this matter and others connected
with the meetings -
A person of the name of Samuel Roberts
who has also left this place since - has
promised to surrender himself to John
Thomas to-morrow Morning - He was
at the Coach and Horses when this prisoner
was there and was an active Chartist - and
I think it probable that with Management
he will say a great Deal.
A person named George Such who is now
working with Mr Powell of
the Gaer, a saddler, from this place, can
give Evidence against this prisoner as
he was at the Coach & Horses on the
Sunday the 3rd Nov r. and must
have seen and heard Every thing
that passed

Page 3:
William Jones, Saddler, of this place will be
called for the Defence and if cross examined
will disclose some important facts - as he will
answer Every question honestly and truly - He
can give Evidence of prisoner having frequently
told him that he was a member of the Lodge
of Chartists at the Coach ____ I do not myself
believe that Davies rode down to Newport
as stated by Old [?] Harmer, as I cannot hear
the tittle of even a rumour of the Kind
among all the persons here, some of
whom are rather badly affected towards
the prisoner

John Morgan Prisoner
Thos Morgan Do. ____ In these Cases

The following witnesses are summoned to
attend at Newport to morrow - they have
been directed to come to you-

[lines 6-8 are divided with
a vertical line in two columns :
on the left side]
Richard Lewis, Waterloo [a]
[?] Hananiah Morgans, Havod yr ishclod [b]
Wm Jones __ __

[right column]
Thos Thomas Xpenmaine [c]
Joseph Lewis, Penrhiw [d]

Mr. Rogers had therefore better proceed to
take their Depositions as they come to you.

_John James of Court y bella [e] & }
_John Lewis Jones of Cumcorrug [f]} _have been
Summoned by Watts Instructions to go
down to morrow --

It is almost useless attempting to Examine the
witnesses up here, as one and all, they try to suppress
Everything - the only plan is to send them down
at once to Newport and they are then frightened
into it, when they get far Enough from home .

Reports are very rife here that there will
be another "Rising" and that the men meet
underground - the people here think there is
something in it and that some further mischief
is brewing __ Yours very faithfully Thos M Lewellin
