Henry Lewis of Tredegar states: That at three o'clock
I went up to the Colliers Row to the house where I used to resort
and when I got there the door was locked and the people asked
who was there I told them Henry, upon which they opened the
door - the first thing I saw on entering was a stick about 8 yards
long and several others of various sizes with an iron ferule on
each stick - I also saw a hammer lying on the floor - I asked
them what they did with that hammer Thomas Morgan said to
sharpen the point of the Sticks- I then asked him what they were going
to do with them he told me they were mops tails- I replied they are
very comical mops tails- Oh! he answered they will answer the purpose
for which they are intended well enough- I took three of them to Cefngola last night and if I had met some one on the road I would have stuck
one of them in him and that is what we intend doing to night- John
Morgan was sitting by the window the whole time - his brother in Law
was also in the house William Evans - this took place in the house of W[illia]m
Evans where they all resided - On Sunday the day the Chartists rose -
Williams Evans was sitting by the door inside he appeared very low hearted
and never spoke - John Morgan said I don't know where we are going
they appeared to me to be pikes indeed I have no doubt but they were pikes
I saw the same on mens shoulders as I saw in Evans' house- at 8 o'clock
by the Church of Tredegar going towards Sirhowy bridge the night they
went to Newport- the night being dark I could not see who they
were - I am quite sure it was on the Sunday night they rose- I
was glad to bundle home to my own house being afraid they would
press me and take me along with them-
