Newport 5 Janu[ar]y 1840

Sir,
This evening the witnesses
for the defence left amongst them
is Alfred Williams of the Tredegar
Arms - to character - Mr Hamblyn
to prove that R Waters was asleep on
the sophar when the Mob came
in front of the Westgate & that he
aroused him up -- and to some expression
our Waters made after -- Mr Man
a Painter a notorious Chartist who
used to address them at the Royal Oak
and was out of the way for some
time after the riots. Ben Gould from
the friars field -- Hasler and
a tall fellow of the name of [...]Frost
who is a hand in one of the Market

Boats - John Davis a Mason who
ran away after the riots & was brought
over from Bristol as a prisoner & discharged
Powell who sells lozengers in the market
was a Prisoner & discharged the last
day ^and is a most violent Chartist H. [?]T.../ & /G[?].../ accompanied
them -- I have been informed that
Townsend & T Wells are supaened[sic] but
for what purpose I have not been
able to learn -- Alfred Williams
who I believe is to speak as to Character
has been heard to say that if Frost
is not hung Justice will not be done
Man & Frost is supposed to have been
at the Royal Oak at a meeting held on
Saturday night the Second of November
when a question was discussed what
was to be done with the Magistrates

Mary Jones who will prove to seeing
Hodge in Bed at half past eight o clock
his wife havd put back the clock
& she observed that the Clock was
slow that it was ten o clock by
a neighbours Clock ---
I have given you this information
in hope it will be useful in
the cross examination
