All four members of the Barry Railway (Red Funnel Fleet) steamers laid up for the winter in the Basin at Barry Dock, probably the winter of 1908. The steamers are the 'Westonia' nearest the camera, alonside is the 'Devonia', facing the camera on the right the 'Barry' and in the background the 'Gwalia'. A Barry Pilot Cutter is moored between Westonia and Devonia with the mainsail partially hoisted. In the fore ground is the upper part of the funnel of a vessel the Dry Dock. In the left middle distance a large steamer is proceeding through thr 'new cut' into No 2 Dock. In the background Ranks Mill is the dominant building near the centre with the east hydraulic pump house to the right
