Description
Wales was, in the Middle Ages, acknowledged
throughout Europe, for its holy places – one of
which was Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli) which
became the focus of one of the Christian
pilgrim routes.
The holiness of this island was not only because of its remoteness but also because of the legend
attached to it having been claimed to be the burial site of Myrddin Emrys (Merlin) - the wizard of all
wizards. It has also been identified by some as Avalon where King Arthur died. Beatrice sketched this view of Bardsey Island – lying off the southern tip of the Peninsula.
