Description

As the Republican government in Madrid came under increasing pressure from the General Franco and his Nationalist Army during 1936, the order was issued in November to evacuate the city. This photograph shows the belongings of Madrid citizens abandoned on the street. The photograph is part of a collection brought back to Wales by John Williams Hughes, a volunteer from Anglesey who assisted with the humanitarian effort during the Spanish Civil War and reported back to Britain on events in the country.
