Description
A hymn book commissioned and published by William Hughes of the African Training Institute, Colwyn Bay. For his third journey he wanted to take along 2000 copies of a hymn book which included the languages English and German for the introduction and Duala (a Cameroonian language) throughout. This is possibly the first hymn book published in an indigenous African language. Although Hughes could not travel due to the First World War, the hymn books clearly were sent and brought into circulation. The music is in Sol-Fa notation, showing its Welsh nonconformist influence and connection. This set of scans shows the trilingual introduction and a selection of hymns, one with an African title and two connected to well-known Welsh hymns.
