Description
The home guard was a volunteer force , and their primary role was as a secondary defence force in the event of an invasion, guard coastal areas and other important places such as airfields, factories and explosive stores. The home Guard consisted of around 1.5 million volunteers, made up of those who were otherwise ineligible for the regular armed services, such as outside the age limit or those in reserved occupations.
