Description
The three photos show a Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) demonstration held at Partridge Square, Llwynypia, by the various Rhondda branches of CND, trade unions and anti war political groups. The demonstration was against the deployment of nuclear capable cruise missiles by the US at their Greenham Common airbase in Berkshire. The motto on the Rhondda Fach branch banner 'Protest and Survive' echoes the government slogan of the day 'protect and survive' in case of nuclear war. All the local CND branches had a high proportion of women members a number of whom took part in the women's peace camps at Greenham Common. This demonstration, in the early 1980s, marched to (or from) the recently built Magistrates Court which was reputed to have a nuclear bunker underneath it for use by the council in time of war. Top left of the first photograph is St Cynons Church, Llwynypia; the second photograph shows the rear of the crowd outside the old Llwynypia Hospital in the roadway where the bus service from Maerdy terminated. The old covered bus shelter, partly obscured by banners, is visible on the right of the third photograph.
