Description

The miner's flame safety lamp is perhaps the most iconic of all mining equipment. Humphrey Davy discovered that a perforated metal or wire gauze will cool a flame passing through it, thereby preventing the ignition of an external inflammable mixture. Davy's basic lamp was much improved by later designers but such was the fame of Davy, that all types of miners' lamps tend to be called 'Davy lamps' by the general public.
