Description

Griffith Jones was in the 13th Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers, which landed in France in December 1915. His battalion was part of the 38th (Welsh) Division, which was ordered to take the heavily defended Mametz Wood as part of the Somme campaign. Griffith was killed in action at Mametz Wood on 10 July 1916. His body was never recovered; his name is one of the 72,000 on the Thiepval Memorial commemorating the soldiers who died on the Somme sector and had no known grave.
