Description

George Jacob Rees, born in Llandaff and resident in Nantgarw, enlisted in Caerphilly and joined the 'Cardiff Pals', the 11th Battalion Welch Regiment. He served in the Salonika campaign (ie. fighting against Germany's ally Bulgaria) and was killed at the Battle of the Doiran (18 September 1918) when the Cardiff Pals, and units of the Royal Welch Fusiliers and the South Wales Borderers were annihilated attempting a frontal attack upon heavily fortified positions on the Grande Couronne mountain. His family received the news of his death on 11 November 1918 - Armistice Day.
