Description

These photographs show Private Thomas Williams, (born in Landore, Swansea, in 1894) in uniform. He joined the 14th Battalion of the South Wales Borderers (known as the 'Swansea Pals') in June 1915 and served with them on the Western Front (including the Battle of Mametz Wood). He was wounded in 1918 and demobbed in March 1919. Tommy died aged 53 in 1947 of carcinoma of the bronchial tube, which was most probably exacerbated by mustard gas poisoning during his service in the First World War.
