Description

Thomas Williams, born in Penmachno in 1886, was working as a tailor in Colwyn Bay when the First World War broke out. Tom enlisted in the Liverpool Scottish Regiment on 21 November 1915 and is seen here his comrades in the regimental uniform. This postcard was sent on the day they departed for France, 9 April 1916, to Tom's father, William Pritchard Williams. The text reads: Cychwyn heddyw i France. Cewch lythyr yn fuan. Gwelwch fy llun tu ol i'r dot. Cofion oll Tom. (Translation: Setting off to France today. You'll receive a letter soon. You'll see my photo behind the dot. Wishes to you all. Tom). Tom was later wounded and captured by the Germans. He returned to Wales, and died in 1945.
