Description

Alfred Knight (born 12 May 1918 died 4 November 2013), plumber from Skewen. Enrolled with the Military Hospital Reserve in July 1939. Alf's diary shows 'Hitler starts on Poland' on 1st September, war declared on 3rd September. Alf received his call-up papers on the Monday, 4 September, and was in Aldershot by Wednesday. Training at Cambridge Hospital, Aldershot. Selected for overseas service. Sailed from the Clyde on the troopship Strathavon via Algiers to Port Said. In Libya, Serte, Tripoli and Misrata. Leave in Palestine, the church of the Holy Sepulchre, Dome of the Rock and Garden of Gethsemane. Return home on troopship Wollendam. Demob.
