Y Drych December 29, 1881
PITTSBURGH, PA., Dec. 14.—Business remains lively with workers of the iron, steel and glass works enjoying a good time. Smallpox is very bad in our city and many are dying of it. Recently in one family here the husband and wife died of the smallpox within a fortnight of one another, namely Mr. Wm. Rees and his wife, leaving four small children orphaned of their father and mother. They had come to this country from Abertawe/Swansea, South Wales about three years ago.
There will be two competition meetings [translator's not: probably Eisteddfodau] on Christmas night—one in Ross Street church and the other at South Side church. Apmadoc [Chief Bard of the American Gorsedd] will hold a concert at the Second Street chapel on January 7th. With all of this we will have happy holidays with plenty of singing.—W. H. Harries.
Translated by Martha A. Davies Lincoln, Nebraska March 2009
