Description

This chalice veil is made of silk and embroidered in 17th century style. It was probably used at Mass in the House of Thomas Gunter's Chapel. The chalice veil is used to cover the chalice during Mass. The central area depicts the Jesuit Sign IHS (Jesu Hominem Salvator or Jesus, Saviour of Man) and a starburst motif. Also within the central area are the tools of the passion of Christ, wounds in the hands and feet (token) and the nails. This is very fine embroidery, which has been much repaired along the folds and is sometimes in use.
