Description

This is .an interesting document held at Gwent Archives. It is part of the Survey of Magna Porta 1634-1660 (the year of the Restoration of Charles II) and made for Sir Edward Morgan of Llantarnam Abbey. In this section, he forbids the tenants of Wentwood from selling their customary rights of quarrying a little stone for mending and building houses and wood for kindling, because the practice had become widespread and threatened to drain the resources from the wood. It caused a riot in Wentwood, which had to be restrained by Colonel Spalding and the garrison at Chepstow Castle.
