Description

Cefntilla Court was bought for the family of the First Baron Raglan after his death while still serving in the Crimea in 1855. A fund was set up to provide his family with a suitable home in Wales.

Above the entrance porch is an inscription, dated 1858, which reads: “This house with 238 acres of land was purchased by 1,623 of friends, admirers and comrades in arms of the late Field Marshall Lord Raglan GCB and presented by them to his son and heirs for ever in a lasting memorial of affectionate regard and respect”.

The First Baron Raglan was Lord FitzRoy Somerset, second in command at the 1815 Battle of Waterloo in which his lost his right arm. He was subsequently a commander during the Crimean War.
