Description

Drawing by Falcon Hildred. Managers and the managed, 1999
Ink and watercolour on paper.
Industrial development during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries created a need for varieties of housing that reflected social stratification and the relationships of workers to foremen, managers and owners. This drawing contrasts the housing for the 'managed' quarrymen down in the valley in terraced houses and the 'managers' in larger, detached homes. Falcon notes how the slate roofs seem to merge with the slate tips.
