Description

Drawing by Falcon Hildred. Tŷ Uncorn, Blaenau Ffestiniog- reconstruction of interior, 1978
Pencil and watercolour on paper.
These drawings reconstruct the interior of one of the four cottages at Tŷ Uncorn. They shows how the fireplace - the heart of the home - changed through time. When the cottages were first built, they had traditional open fireplaces which were used for cooking and warming the house. In the mid-nineteenth century, cast-iron stoves were introduced and provided more effective and cleaner ways of heating the home and preparing food. At the time of survey the fireplace had been entirely covered over.
