Description

Drawing by Falcon Hildred. Former Almshouses, Overton-on-Dee, 1992
Pencil and watercolour on paper.
These former almshouses on Salop Road in Overton-on-Dee near Wrexham were built in 1848 in memory of Caroline Bennion, a daughter of a Wrexham lawyer. Her sisters Dorothea and Mary Ann donated the land, paid for all construction work, and gave an endowment of over £1,000 for the upkeep of the building and care of the residents. The almshouses were occupied by widows over 60 who were resident in Overton-on-Dee and who were members of the Church of England. The buildings have been converted into private homes.
