Tremadog church and church gate, 2003
One of the earliest Gothic revival churches to be built in Wales, St Mary's was provided by the founder of the planned borough of Tremadog (or Tremadoc), William Madocks MP. A religious liberal, Maddocks had to explain to the Bishop of Bangor his decision to provide the town with a nonconformist chapel, stating that the church would be built on stone but the chapel on sand: a true statement geologically. Perched on a prominent rocky outcrop, the impact of the church is enhanced by the Coadestone gateway, which Madocks had shipped from London in kit form.
